We could feel the cold in our bones while we were sat in the 900 year old Leper Chapel on Saturday 23 November 2024 at 1.30pm to listen to Sean Roy Parker read from his new book of poems, Stewarding. My cup of coffee turned cold, so I leaned into my husband’s warm coat to try to warm up. There was a quiet chat between artist and wysing curator about practice, history, and what led to the writing of these poems. And then Roy began to read. I was transported from the cold medieval chapel into a worm’s world of compost, magical art installations made up of our waste. Imagining myself as a tiny creature wiggling through this compost lasagne encountering all of the processes needed to feed and enrich our earth. When the reading was over, we had a delicious snack made by Roy of blue cheese with quince jelly and went on our way. The wiggling memory of the worm’s world has not left me and I think I could fall in love with a compost pile someday soon.
